Ranking Disney Films of 2017

This year there are 8 different Disney films coming out in 2017! In this blog I will be ranking all the films coming out this year from what I’m least to most excited to see.

8. Star Wars Episode VIII

Premise:

The next installment in the franchise. (Obviously Disney and LucasFilms have been very secretive of all the recent Star Wars films, so there isn’t a lot released about the film at this point. We know it is a continuation of the newest franchise taking place after The Force Awakens.)

I know A LOT of people are going to disagree with me, but I’m just not a huge Star Wars fan. I have only seen the very first (original) Star Wars Episode IV: New Hope, released in 1977. I had to watch it for one of my many Film Studies classes in college. The film was pretty good, and I understand why everyone likes them so much. Unfortunately, I just haven’t made time to watch any of the other films. I have no idea what any of the other films are about! This is the only reason why Star Wars Episode VIII is last because I haven’t seen any of the others before it.

7. Beauty and the Beast Premise:

Belle is a young woman who is taken prisoner by a Beast in his castle in exchange for the freedom of her father Maurice. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle's enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast's exterior to recognize the true heart and soul of the human Prince within just as a hunter named Gaston is on the loose to take Belle for himself and hunt down the Beast at any cost.

Everyone is super excited for the new live-action Beauty and the Beast, however, I am not. I’m honestly not a huge fan of the original Beauty and the Beast. It’s not that I don’t like the original film because I think it is good. But, every time I watch Beauty and the Beast I have nightmares! EVERY! SINGLE! TIME! They all involve the wardrobe Madame de la Grande Bouche. I don’t know what it is about her but she freaks me out! After seeing the new trailers and TV spots the animation of Miss Pots and Chip also scare me a little bit. It’s not that I will never watch the film; I just have to mentally prepare myself to possibly have scary dreams.

6. Thor: Ragnarok

Premise:

Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk, his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor's quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.

I’m a fan of all of Avengers and all of their individual films. Yet, for some weird reason the plot of this film seems a little bit like the last Captain America: Civil War where Captain America and Iron Man fight each other, and now Thor and the Hulk are fighting each other?! Thor is one of my favorite Avengers, and I really liked the original film, but like all of the other sequels to all the other films the quality just seems to go down a little bit each time.

5. Born in China

Premise:

Disneynature, in its ongoing quest to bring the natural world to the big screen as never before, presents its most ambitious project to date, takes moviegoers on a grand journey into the wilds of China. “Born In China” follows the adventures of three animal families — the majestic panda, the savvy golden monkey and the elusive snow leopard.

The Disneynature films are always a great way to help out the Earth on Earth Day, and like all the films before it is a great way to see the world and the animals living in it. As an animal lover I love watching these films. However, I have to prepare myself in order to watch them because chances are an animal is going to die, and I will cry! This will be the main reason why I will wait for the film to come out on DVD, because I don’t like crying in movie theaters with a bunch of children who are to busy asking their parents what’s happening in the film. I think I’m most excited to see the snow leopard and the pandas because we’ve already seen a lot of monkeys in the past films. Plus snow leopards and pandas a beautiful and rare animals we don’t see a whole lot in person or anywhere else for that matter.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2

Premise:

Set two months after the first film, the Guardians of the Galaxy travel throughout the cosmos and struggle to keep their newfound family together, while helping Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.

If the music in this film is half as good as the first than the film will probably be pretty good. One thing I would like to see in this film is the storyline is a little bit more coherent than the first one. The story in the first film was good, but there were points in the film that didn’t fully make a lot of sense. The purpose of the first film in a series is to kind of give some information on each of the characters (unless they’re all getting their own films…which I don’t think is going to happen). I do like that we might get to see more of Star Lords background and where he comes from since he is the main character. Fingers crossed we get to see where his excellent taste in music comes from.

3. Cars 3

Premise:

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen pushes himself beyond his limits and crashes at the Los Angles Speedway, causing him to take a temporary break from his racing career to recover from his injury. To get back in the game he will need the help of eager young female race technician Cruz Ramirez. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet, he will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage against his new rival, Jackson Storm.

I think we can all agree Cars 3 should have been Cars 2. Cars 3 seems like it has a much more thought out plot than Cars 2 did. I know a lot of people aren’t the biggest Cars fan, but I actually really liked the first film. When I saw the previews for the 2nd film I was kind of like, “meh.” But after seeing just the teaser trailer for the 3rd film I was pretty excited to see it. There just sees to be a lot more thought put into this film. Cars 2 seemed like was a 2 hour long Mater short meets a cartoon James Bond. Where as Car 3 actually seems to be going back to the original feel good core of the first film.

2.CoCo

Premise:

Coco follows the secret musical ambitions of Miguel, who resides in a lively, loud Mexican village but comes from a family of shoemakers that may be the town’s only music-hating household. But Miguel harbors a secret desire to seize his musical moment, inspired by his favorite singer of all time, the late Ernesto de la Cruz. It’s only after Miguel discovers an amazing link between himself and De la Cruz that he takes action to emulate the famous singer and, in doing so, accidentally enters the Land of the Dead.

There hasn’t been a ton released yet on Coco, but as a big Pixar fan I’m excited to see the film. I know a lot of people haven’t been really impressed with some of the newest Pixar films that have been released over the last couple of years. It seems like after Cars 2 the storylines just seems forced and not fully thought out. More like the main focus is to get these films out quickly to make the most money as fast as they can, without worrying about the quality of the story. I think after Pixar announced late last year about pushing Toy Story 4 back because it’s not ready yet, shows they might be going back to working on more important feel good stories and great animation. Based on what we know so far of Coco and the stills that have been released it seems like it might be similar to Up.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Premise:

Captain Jack Sparrow is pursued by an old rival, Capitán Salazar, who along with his crew of ghost pirates has escaped from the Devil's Triangle, and is determined to kill every pirate at sea. Jack seeks the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants its possessor total control over the seas, in order to defeat Salazar.

Everyone is going to disagree with me on this one and I know it! But, I am so excited for the fifth Pirates installment. Pirates of the Caribbean is my Harry Potter or Star Wars, I go crazy for these films. The first film came out when I was 10, and I did not want to see it at all when it was released. But, after being forced to the drive-in I not only fell in love with the film, but also pirates, and more importantly Johnny Depp. Captain Jack Sparrow is literally incredible. Johnny Depp does an amazing job with his character, and as long as he’s in the film my butt will be in the seats at the theater. I know a lot of people really liked the first film and didn’t care about the sequels, but I just love each of them so much. Plus, Will Turner is returning, so now we can see where his story went after At Worlds End. I just need to see the return of the Black Pearl, and Jack’s original crew (which probably won’t happen based on the background given in the 4th film On Stranger Tides). May 26th can’t come soon enough!
