What You’ll Need:

  • White Clay

  • Paintbrush

  • Spray Paint (Black and Silver)

  • Black Paint

  1. Take your clay and roll it into a ball.

  1. Lightly push clay on a flat surface until in the shape of a flattened oval.

  1. Using the end of the paintbrush lightly push it into the clay to form the skulls eyes and eyebrows.

  1. Near the center of the brooch draw a thin horizontal line with the end of the paint brush, then draw four vertical lines underneath the first line all the way to the bottom (Tip: when drawing the “teeth” draw one line about 4cm from each end. Then draw another 2cm away from the first line. The middle section should be the biggest section with no lines in it).

  1. Cut away the lines closest to the ends of the face on each side.

  1. Go over all your lines with the end of the paintbrush and make them more defined. (Tip: tilting the paintbrush at an angle makes the eyes more of a teardrop shape).

  2. Follow the drying instructions for the clay. Mine called for baking the clay at 275 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.

  1. Once your clay is dry, lightly go over the brooch spay paint. Pick one color and let it dry before going over it with the other. (Tip: Keep paint at a far distance so you don’t cover too much of the brooch with the paint. You want it to only lightly cover it so some of the white clay is still showing).

  1. Let spay paint dry completely before carefully, painting in the eyebrows, eyes, and mouth with black paint and let dry.

  2. OPTIONAL: As you can see from the photo on step 9 I got a little bit too close with the spray paint and almost completely covered the brooch. Once all of my paint dried I took a thick metal nail file and started scrapping off the paint. Not only did it make the white reappear, but it also gave the brooch an awesome distressed look!
