This is all my own opinion on which Disney Halloween movies are my favorite. Disney has some really great, and very under appreciated Halloween films. The best thing about these movies is they are family friendly. They are fun, a little bit spooky, and great for every one of all ages.

#5 Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge

Aside from the very first Halloweentown, this movie was one of the best ones in the series. This film does a great job picking up where the last one left off. All though it takes place two years later I loved being able to see how the characters grew up and figured out their powers. What I loved most about this film was the way Halloweentown was transformed when it was cursed. Gone was the bright colored Halloween esthetic, and it it’s place has this old timey movie looking world in dull black, white, and gray tones. It was so interesting to me to see all these ghoulish characters from the first film suddenly look like average and boring humans living in the most uninteresting world. They went from living in this world of festive Halloween color to this dull boring land where no one wanted to be because it was just like the mortal world only even more boring. Being able to see what all these spooky characters from the first film looked like as normal people was interesting, but also made you feel like this was not who they were supposed to be. This film still has the Halloween feel to it, but it almost makes the statement of how life would be if Halloween were never actually a Holiday at all.

#4 Phantom of the Megaplex

This may be on of the most under rated and under appreciated DCOMs out there. Growing up I always loved watching this movie. It was almost the perfect “horror” films for younger kids. It’s a great mix of scary and who done it kind of film. The majority of the movie takes place in a huge movie theater complex they may or may not be haunted. A huge movie premier will be taking place later on, and who hasn’t dreamed of a new epic movie premiering at your home theater. Getting ready to see bug named celebrities come to the theater you go to every weekend to see a new movie. But, also weird and strange things keep happening in all of these movie theaters that make the theater a bit spooky like maybe it is actually haunted. I think this movie is a great gateway film for older viewer. It’s a great blend of family friendly, mysterious and a little scary that will potentially lead viewer to more mature movies similar to this, as they get older.

#3 Nightmare Before Christmas

For most people this film would probably be there favorite Disney Halloween movie because it’s such a great film with a huge fan following. However, the only reason it’s not higher on the list for me is because I see this film as more of a Christmas movie than a Halloween one. I know a lot of people debate of which kind of Holiday film this movie it is because it has a lot of both Halloween and Christmas in it it’s hard to know for sure. Everyone has their own opinion on it. I do however see why people see it as a Halloween film, because it takes place the day after Halloween in a town where it’s Halloween all the time. Plus in a lot the Christmas scenes Jack is adding some Halloween twists to the Holiday. The characters in this film are all beloved by fan whether they are good or bad. I think this film was a why future Tim Burton stop motion films like The Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie became so popular in the coming years.

#2 Hocus Pocus

Even though this film was released the same year I was born, I didn’t actually watch it for the first time until a few years ago. I had heard a lot of people talk about the film in the past, but never knew why everyone was so obsessed with it. It wasn’t until I was able to sit down and watch it one night during ABC Family’s 13 Night of Halloween. Then I truly understood why everyone loved this movie so much. The comedy in this film is spot on, and there are so many great jokes and one-liners. It’s crazy to me that this film was originally supposed to be made into a DCOM and instead Disney thought it was too good to be just being on cable TV so they released it in theaters. It has that Disney Channel Original Movie feel to it, but has a bit more adult humor that anyone in the family could enjoy it. It’s still crazy to me that a film with such big named actors in it is still relatively unknown to a lot of people. It’s the true definition of a Cult Halloween film.

#1 Halloweentown

This Disney Channel Original Movie was not only my favorite Halloween movie growing up, but it was also one of my favorite DCOMs as well. I had always been so fascinated with the town Marnie and her family traveled to in this film. If you never wanted to visit Halloweentown after seeing this movie than you have no Halloween spirit. Every thing about the town was extremely interesting to me. How all these Halloween creatures from witches to goblins and skeletons to vampires could all live in one town just like normal people was so cool. This was the perfect movie for me as a kid because the characters in the film were all just living normal lives until they traveled on a magic bus to this awesome town of Halloween. These normal kids discover they are actually witches and without hardly any training they are able to save an entire town and all of its civilians. When I found out Halloweentown is an actual place you could visit in Oregon that dresses the town in all of the films decorations including the giant Jack O’Lantern in the center of town, you better believe that’s on my Halloween bucket list. Marnie was right when she said, “Halloween is cool.”
